A Useful Guide On Protecting Against Elephant Poachers

By Brenda Brown

The threat of elephants by poachers is real. Annually more than twenty thousand elephants are massacred for ivory on the African continent. These figures are alarming and if no measures are not taken to support effort on protecting against elephant poachers, the animals will soon be extinct. This guide seeks to highlight practical measures that are needed to curb this menace.

Poachers engage in this senseless act because there is still a market for ivory. One sure way of making sure that these animals are not hunted is by eliminating the market for elephant tusks. For this to succeed, countries around the world must join forces to ban the trade of ivory. Luckily, many countries have led the way and the rest should follow suit.

As individuals, people should be encouraged not to buy products made of ivory. It does not matter how luxurious the items are, you can also always get alternatives in the market. Now, this sacrifice should be seen as service to humanity as the final result is saving these animals for future generations. When people are sensitized on these issues, they are likely to support this worth causes as opposed to when they are left in the dark.

In order to reach out to many people around the world, activists should be encouraged to run aggressive campaigns on both online platforms and mainstream media. While such programs may not have an instant impact, in the long run, people will see the sense in conserving elephants and the demand for ivory products will continue to decrease.

It is also important to understand that the people who do the actual killing of the animals are usually not the masterminds of poaching activities. This is because the poachers are contracted to kill the animals by wealthy individuals. They provide weapons and logistical support. Therefore, if governments want to eliminate this practice, the need to use intelligence to track the real masterminds and bring them to book. Stringent laws need to be enacted so that these individuals get extremely punitive sentences if found guilty of poaching activities.

Besides punishing offenders, governments must come up with defensive measures that prevent poachers from reaching these animals. While game reserves and sanctuaries may have wardens, sometimes the personnel deployed in these areas are too few to offer sufficient surveillance of these facilities. Investing in technology such as the use of drones can help rangers monitor and secure games parks with ease.

These wardens should be trained on combat skills and provided with proper tools such vehicles, clothing, communication equipment and weapons. This because the poachers often are better equipped than the rangers. They have more lethal weapons and are even well trained than the warden. With the right training, wardens can face poachers with confidence and drive them away.

Another way of protecting elephants from being killed for ivory is to support conservation efforts. There are people who have partnered with governments to rescue baby elephants or wounded animals and help them to recover. These efforts go a long way in ensuring that elephants are protected.
