Things To Consider When Buying Unique Attic Ladders

By Debra Howard

Ladders are either a set of inclined or vertical rungs or steps which can either be rigged that can lean against walls or a rope one that hangs from top. The former are portable usually but may be fixed permanently into structures, equipment or buildings. They are made of metal, tough plastic, fiberglass or wood commonly.

These help you reach out places which are otherwise unreachable with other methods or helps climb other areas easily. This includes attics and other similar spaces which requires unique attic ladders in getting to them rather than using stairways instead. The following things must be considered when purchasing one for your home.

Determine where you will be placing the ladder by checking the size your access hole has including the ceiling frame. Most of them only need a slight enlargement for the opening but others require a new hole for accessing the attic. Make sure that the bottom part also a safe spot to rest with enough space for maneuvering.

Check the type of ceiling framing and roof you have which could be either floor joists with individual rafters or trusses. Standards ones can be easily reorganized usually while trusses have their components in an interlocking system which cutting is not allowed. Seek professionals for advice when the truss roof you have blocks the access location you planned.

Most ladders will fit floor joists spaces as designed and if yours have that gap which is recommended then that is lucky or else it would require an additional framing. The joist may run on wrong direction with regard to your installation and fixing it is through cutting and surrounding the opening with joists and headers. Professionals must be asked for options in trusses though.

Make sure there is enough landing space on the attic floor where you could mount and dismount the ladder safely. Enough headroom is important also to prevent having your head banged against the framing always when climbing. If there is not enough space then look for models with compact designs meant for small areas like closets.

These products are sold in a variety of lengths so ensure you have measured already the distance from the floor to the ceiling before making your purchase. Its weight indicate what capacity of load it could hand and those that can hold more is sturdier. This would mean the weight of climbing person and the carried load must not total to more than its capacity.

They have a variety of features that helps in convenience, general usability and safety with the personal preference a deciding factor. Some ladders extend by folding itself out, have mechanisms that are similar to scissors, and telescope similarly to extension ones. Their angle depends upon your preference with it being more steep or not.

They could also be outfitted with handrails which means when climbing, you would hold on handrails or just the rungs if that is what you like. You may choose to have steps or rungs but the latter is the most common choice among them. They may cause the loss of heated and cooled air so find models which has insulation.
